The End Result…
By being the holder of a full Class 2 licence, you will be able to drive any heavy rigid vehicle that is capable of carrying loads and weighing up to a maximum of 18,000 kgs.
A Class 2 licence is the first stepping stone for those who wish to drive heavy vehicles in the Road Transport Industry. To be eligible for a Class 2 licence, a full Class 1 licence must be held for six months or more. The Class 2 training course requires applicants to have a Class 2 learner licence, although we can also assist with training towards this. (Check out our Learner Licence course!). A medical check up is required to gain this licence.
The Class 2 training course includes two days theory training in class and up to four hours on road training and assessment. Participants will complete unit standards 17574 and 24089 which will also be registered onto the NZQA framework.
What This Licence Means…
By holding this licence you will be able to drive any heavy rigid vehicle (Between 6,000-18,000kgs when loaded) AND you will also be able to drive other vehicles that fit certain requirements. You may also drive vehicles that are…
– Above 18,000kg when loaded but only have two axles.
– A combination vehicle (not tractor/trailer) which has a total combined weight less than 12,000kg.
– A rigid vehicle weighing less than 18,000 when loaded towing a light trailer weighing less than 3,500kg when loaded.
– A tractor weighing between 6,000-18,000kg when loaded that can travel at a speed above 30kmph.
And of course you can drive any vehicle covered by your Class 1 licence. When the Class 2 licence is held in combination with a F,R or T endorsement, you may operate that special-type vehicle if it is over 18,000kg. With a W endorsement, you will be able to operate special-type wheeled vehicles that weigh less than 18,000 when loaded or drive the vehicle at a speed not exceeding 30kmph if it exceeds this weight.
